THESE ARE AVAILABLE NOW!!!
and these pretty guys …..
So…we have been supporters of FAMILIA since day one…that is no secret around here… however, the driving force behind the brand and NIKE SB here in South Africa is one MR ADRIAN DAY …. somebody who has been skateboarding for longer than you and is an active force behind this industry here in South Africa … INSIDE MY HEAD will be a regular interview series and as we will soon be launching our new shop team which AD happens to be a part of, we guessed it was high time to give you the low down on this guy …. enjoy
HEY ADRIAN…YOU HAVE BEEN SKATEBOARDINGFOR MOST OF YOUR LIFE,CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU FELL IN LOVE WITH FOUR WHEELS ?
My neighbour started started skateboarding. Once he started I was pretty much into it. I don’t really know what attracted me…I think it had a bit to do with that Cali surf vibe at the time. Then once I saw Thrashin’Â I was like fuck yeah! It’s on! Skateboarding just seemed like the coolest thing ever to me.
SKATEBOARDING IN THE LATE 80′s EARLY 90′s IN
You know what, there’s always been the shit side. The 80′s in SA got pretty lame I think, like Milky Lane contests and shit like that. It was probably really bad, but I was super young so I was just down for skateboarding. The 90′s skateboarding died completely, like around ’92. So then if you had a board you were an alien. But because of that there were only true people doing it, and that was rad. But it also sucked because all the ‘skate’ shops started selling rollerblades and basketball shit. Basically as soon as skateboarding is big there’s a massive lame element. Like it’s sold out. But it’s not skateboarding’s fault – skateboarding remains skateboarding, it’s just everything people do around it or to make money off of it. And also people start for the wrong reasons, like because it’s cool or whatever. But inevitably those people can’t survive in it, because to do it properly, not look like a kook and push it forward you are eventually going to have to dedicate yourself to it and have that mindset.
Well, negative side in my day was you had to fight and WANT to know about skateboarding. There was no easy info or product, so in that way it was hard. When I started it was just super difficult, but it was totally innocent too, like you were into skateboarding first and then the hype followed – if you wanted to find out more. Kids today starting will buy into the hype before they start. Like they might start because of some ad or TV show that is a bad representation of skateboarding, so they start off on the wrong foot. But the good side is with the flow of info they can find the golden shit pretty easily and be exposed to good influence fast. But it’s up to them…
I’m not sure I have anything on lock. I guess on transition back disasters feel good on something proper and I’ve pretty much got those. Back tails on street usually, although not yesterday! They always feel rad to me. I think it is almost impossible to have anything 110% locked in. There are always variables.
You know what, I thought I did for a while. The last few years I got a bit confused with skateboarding and why I was doing it. Like getting so deep in the industry and relying on skateboarding for money kind of clouded it all. And then always putting pressure on myself to do good shit or to prove myself. So for a while I was lost in it, and yeah, at times I hated it. And half the time I hate the industry. But that’s not actually skateboarding. Skateboarding is way simpler than all that. It can be frustrating and you can get hurt, but that’s your deal. Even watching videos and hating what you see – that’s not skateboarding, that’s watching skateboarding videos! Earlier this year me and a girlfriend split up after seven and a half years, and I even thought at some point that skateboarding was to blame, like it made me the fuck up that destroyed the relationship. But no, that was me, and through all of that I have realised that skateboarding is simple, and it’s the best fucking thing in my life and I love it deeply. I love progressive days and I love lazy cruiser days. You need to be into skateboarding for its essence. Forget all the nonsense around it, skateboarding is simple.
I think we are pretty far from that still. What blows my mind sometimes is how well surfers are paid and skateboarders are still bottom feeders, yet skateboarding drives the street trends for the most part. For skaters to make any money they have to be aligned with more mainstream companies – that’s just the way it goes here. I also see money pissed away in some circles and go jesus, that could have helped a skateboarder live for a year. But skateboarders need to also shout about their value a bit more I think. The actual skateboard companies however do not make enough to support riders properly, the hardgoods side makes little money here, which sucks, but its oversaturated and the reality is that there aren’t as many dedicated skateboarders as you’d think.

I’m not even sure. I’ve never consciously gone to one but way back in JHB we’d end up at all sorts of awful things. Back in the day as skateboarders we hated ravers. But we used to go to this club when I was young called White Horse Inn. It was the sickest place ever, but over the course of its last six months they basically turned it into a rave every night. They eventually had to close it down because some freak show kidnapped 2 kids and killed one of them. I was there that night. It’s now a drug rehab facility.
Who have you been talking to? Ha ha! Drugs do not agree with me at all. But if I had to take one to save a puppies life or something, I’d TAKE ACID NOW AND LISTEN TO THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE. But I hate drugs – I am not opposed to people taking them if that makes sense. I think everyone should be able to do what they want in that regard, and I think some drugs have been good for culture… like music, books, art. Dylan, Hendrix, Beatles, Stones, Hunter Thompson, beat writers… life would be different if they hadn’t chosen the roads that they did.
Drugs. Joking. Skateboarding and my friends, finding good vinyl, playing guitar, three legged Eddie, and feelgood music for sure.
Well, Duane is gnarly but has had proper problems, and as much respect as he got he pretty much burnt himself out for the most part. Hawk was a kook but invented so many tricks and made bank baby! I don’t know. I am sure you’d want me to say Duane but I couldn’t live a life that hard and fast, so I’ll go with Hawk.
The skatebaording critic dude on facebook,he’s funny as shit! Nah there is a lot … just people who get it man!
Doug Brown – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ur12jI4wOk - mind blowing.
I had a meeting with those people yesterday. My take on it is that if it benefits skateboarding in the long term, facilities are sorted out, cops stop hassling us… then it’s a good thing. Like Cape Town is supposedly the most progressive city in SA yet it is the hardest one to skate in, with overzealous cops, no parks that are worth shit, so things like that need to be addressed. The Kimberley aspect is a bit confusing… I went there once when I was about 10. I don’t even know where it is.
I guess to be remembered for doing shit right and representing skateboarding in a creative and honest way. I guess I have the ego to hope that people like the way I skate.
Worst year of my life, but a necessary one.
I think we hoped it would appeal to people who know what’s up, but mostly we were doing it for ourselves, to create and push something that was in line with the way we viewed skateboarding and societal things. I think we expected those kind of people to get it…
WHAT SHORT AND SWEET ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO START A BOARD COMPANY IN SA IN THE NEAT FUTURE?
Don’t! There’s too many already.
HAVE YOU EVER OLLIED UP A PAVEMENT AND FELL?
Of course. And I am sure it will happen again very soon. You can never conquer skateboarding.
CAPE TOWN HIPSTERS VS JHB HIPSTERS … WHICH ONE PISSES HARDER?
I don’t know. I’d imagine JHB ones are angrier. Have you seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVmmYMwFj1I
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A COMMENT LIKE ” AS HARD AS YOU TRY TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT THE REALITY IS NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE WILL EVER TAKE NOTE TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF IT”?
It’s mostly true. All good art forms, like music, will be mostly overlooked. You can always compare everything to music. The best bands or whatever are not really in the mainstream. The mainstream utilizes music for idiots. Things need to be commercialised to make monetary success, and that has its price.
GIVE US AN AVERAGE DAY CURRENTLY IN THE LIFE OF AD…
Currently wake up in the morning and tell whatever girl is next to me that she’s got to go. I wish. Wake up later than I should, go down to Vida and get sorted. Start battling emails, waste time on facebook, deal with Familia, Nike SB, try and plan better things to do with my life, take Eddie for a walk, skate from my house down to the civic with Donaldson and sometimes Ockie, Jig, Chippy. Or go bomb the mountain road on a cruiser once or twice a week. Get home, try think of ways to avoid going out to a bar. Go to a bar. If not, play records, kick it. Tell Eddie it’s bed time. Go to bed. Wake up and tell the girl next to me she’s got to go. I wish.
1) HOW OLD IS EDDIE?
Not too sure. She’s a rescue dog, but I think she’s around 6, maybe 7.
2) IS HE VEGETARIAN?
Eddie is a ‘she’. No, she’s not vegetarian.
3) DOES IT BUG YOU FEEDING HER MEAT?
No. I think she needs it, I do not.
